At a meeting of it’s Executive on 9 November 2004 Torbay Council gave its support to the Brixham Regeneration programme including projects such as:

  • The redevelopment of the existing multi-storey car park in Middle Street with a supermarket, housing and new car parking facilities.
  • Relocating and upgrading the fish market.
  • Creating employment space adjacent to the new fish market.
  • The development of new housing including affordable homes and commercial units at Freshwater Quarry.
  • The creation of a Northern Arm breakwater.

Fish Market & Commercial Space

Torbay Development Agency has been working very closely with key partners at the South West Regional Development Agency and in government offices administering European funding to complete the funding arrangements for this part of the programme.

The new fish market will provide much needed new space and facilities for the highest value fishing port in England and Wales. The current condition of the market does not help the fishing industry and the addition of new chilling, selling and storage space will be enormously beneficial to the industry in adding value to the catch locally.

The employment space in Oxen Cove will offer a range of spaces suitable for many different types of businesses with the higher floors also offering spectacular views of Torbay. Businesses interested in pre-registering their interest in space here should contact the Torbay Development Agency for further information. The space is expected to open in the summer of 2008.

It is expected that the contract will be let around Easter 2007.

Town Centre Supermarket

Torbay Development Agency and Torbay Council continue to work with interested developers to produce a scheme that meets Brixham’s needs. A number of bids were submitted in late 2006 and it is expected that the preferred development partner will be announced in March 2007.
