Digital TV Switchover

Starting in 2009 the UK's old 'analogue' television broadcast signal is being switched off and replaced with a digital signal.  Any TV set or video recorder that's  not converted to digital when the switchover takes place will no longer receive TV programmes.

In 2009 the West Country TV region will become one of the first in the UK to switch over because the West Country has minimal signal interference with other countries, such as France, who are also switching over to digital. West Country viewers will be among the first to receive the benefits of the digital switchover.  (Currently only 63% of households in the West Country region can get digital reception through their aerial. After switchover almost everyone will be able to enjoy the benefits of digital TV.)

Why are we switching to digital TV?

  • Switchover makes it fairer - Today over two-thirds of UK homes have digital TV.  However one in four cannot get it via their aerial and many still cannot receive channel Five.  Only by switching off the existing analogue broadcasting system is it possible to boost the digital TV signal and provide people with a greater choice of affordable digital options.
  • Digital TV is also more efficient - It frees up airwaves that could be used for innovations such as mobile TV or high definition TV.
  • A world leader in broadcasting - Moving to the best available technology will ensure the UK continues as a world leader in broadcasting.

What do I have to do?

First, you need to choose how you want to get your digital TV signal.  Then decide whether you want to make a one-off payment or pay by monthly subscription:

  • Through an aerial (i.e. Freeview/Top Up TV)
  • By satellite (i.e. Sky/Freesat)
  • Through a cable (i.e. Telewest/Virgin)

More information about the digital switchover in the Torbay area is available in the West Country Information Leaflet.
