Torbay Youth Service has an ongoing partnership with young people in Hamelin, Germany (one of Torbay’s twin towns) and linked towns in the former East Germany, Poland and Russia.
The Youth Exchange with Hamelin has been going for over 30 years, and used to involve young people from the two towns being hosted in families each year. In the last few years, groups from Hamelin and Quedlinburg in Germany, Kalvaria Zebrydowska in Poland, and Bryansk in Russia have participated alongside young people from Torbay, in multi-national events, hosted in each of the four countries.
Torbay hosts a multi-national group on an annual basis at Easter, and on a rolling basis hosts a summer camp. Young people from Torbay are invited to take part in cultural exchanges via the summer camps as part of the Youth Service’s commitment to provide at least one international experience per year. The costs of the visits are met partly through grant aid from Connect Youth International through its Youth for Europe funding, to support young people’s understanding of Europe and to help break down barriers between nations.
