Child Employment
On the 4 August 1998 new Byelaws came into force in Torbay which affect both the hours that children may work and also the type of work some children can do.
The Byelaws also require children to be approved for suitable work as well as requiring risk assessments to be undertaken by an employer. Under the Byelaws, a parent and or employer can commit an offence by failing to comply with the Byelaws, which is punishable by a fine of up to £1,000. The 1933 Children and Young Persons Act (as amended) limits the hours that young people can work at different ages.

Permits
In order for a child of compulsory school age to work lawfully, they must have a work permit. For further information on paid work or work experience for children or to request an application form please contact the Education Welfare Service using the details below or contact your child's school.
