Climate Change Strategy for Torbay

Climate change is having a major impact on our planet. It is being addressed at international and national level, and councils up and down the country are looking at how action can be taken locally, too.

A Climate Change Strategy for Torbay describes how Torbay Council aims to help minimise the economic, social and environmental costs of climate change in the Bay by demonstrating leadership and encouragement in working towards:

  • The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from activities in Torbay by 30% from 1990 levels by 2020
  • Adapting Torbay’s roads, buildings and economy to the likely impacts and opportunities of climate change

The strategy details a series of climate change responses and related actions for the period 2008 - 2013 across the following sectors to achieve the carbon dioxide reduction target and climate change adaptation requirements:

  • Raising awareness
  • Transport
  • Waste management
  • Procurement
  • Energy use and existing buildings
  • Planning and new development
  • Economy and tourism
  • Green spaces

No one person or organisation can tackle climate change alone. Responding to climate change will need the whole community to work together.

A public consultation on the strategy occurred in spring 2008. Thank you to all those who responded. All comments were considered when preparing the final draft, which was adopted in June 2008.
