Flooding can bring misery to those affected and severely disrupt community life. The Environment Agency is keen to add local knowledge to its own records of river, tidal and groundwater flooding.
The 'Community Flood Archive Project' has been set up to capture this information to help build upon our records at the local Devon office.
We are asking local historians, archivists and record keepers if they have any detailed information on flooding in their local area.
Photographs, diary records, newspaper articles, angling club records and old village maps can all contain valuable information on previous flood events in a local area. They may show for example a long-forgotten or filled-in watercourse that could be restored. Plaques and other special marks on buildings also sometimes record flood heights in notable years.
This kind of local knowledge will help the Agency and other authorities manage flood risk more effectively. It will be used to make flood warnings more accurate, identify where future improvements to flood defences are most needed and help planners guide new building work.
We are also looking for organisations, such as museums and historic societies to produce a flood report of their local community. The finished product would then be available for the public to view and learn more about how their ancestors were affected and coped with flooding.
If you think you are able to supply specific flood related information, or produce a report of your local community please contact the local Devon office on 01392 316209 or via email helen.simpson@environment-agency.gov.uk.
Your contributions to the project will be handled sensitively and returned quickly and safely.
