Housing Strategy

Housing Strategy must take into account the supply of, demand for and need for housing and map out how the local authority, with partners, wants the housing system to operate in future years, taking into account the national, regional & local housing priorities.

Our recent housing strategy began with 'The Future of Housing in Torbay' Conference in June 2003, where stakeholders contributed to the Partnership response to local housing issues. We recorded the outcomes then analysed and distilled these views to develop a 'The Future of Housing in Torbay' - A Partnership Strategy 2003 - 2006.

We are pleased to announce that the strategy was awarded 'Fit for Purpose' by the Government. 'Fit for Purpose' establishes the minimum requirements that must be met if a Housing Strategy is an effective, forward looking Strategy.

In the summer we plan to hold another conference to review progress and re-focus our priorities and plans.

'The Future of Housing in Torbay' - A Partnership Strategy 2003 - 2006

'On behalf of the Council's partners I welcome the fresh and positive approach set out in this strategy, geared towards giving a clear direction as to how we can all contribute to the shared priorities. The priorities already reflect the co-operation of the partners in drawing up this document.

It will also be important to the future of housing provision in Torbay that all those who have an interest in this subject see the clear common focus that we are seeking to achieve through this document, so that it can be clearly seen and readily understood that good quality homes for all Torbay residents is, and will remain, a priority. This principle can then become embedded in all future, relevant plans.'

Julian Tuck
Chief Executive of Westcountry Housing Association
