Child Employment Licences

On the 4 August 1998 new Byelaws came into force in Torbay which affect both the hours that children may work and also the type of work some children can do.
The Byelaws also require children to be approved for suitable work as well as requiring risk assessments to be undertaken by an employer. Under the Byelaws, a parent and or employer can commit an offence by failing to comply with the Byelaws, which is punishable by a fine of up to £1,000. The 1933 Children and Young Persons Act (as amended) limits the hours that young people can work at different ages.
Anyone wishing to be a chaperone for children involved in entertainment must be licensed by Torbay Council.
A child can not take part in a performance unless licensed to do so by the Council if they live in Torbay.

In order for a child of compulsory school age to work lawfully, he/she must have a work permit.
