Dog Warden Service

The Dog Warden will help you if you lose your dog, and aims to help prevent stray dogs from being a danger in traffic or a nuisance to people.
In particular, the service aims to deal with problems caused by the main symptoms of irresponsible dog ownership:

Strays

The first time a dog is caught straying, the dog wardens will try to trace the owners and return it. If the owner can not be contacted or found the dog will be taken to Foredown Kennels, in Kingskerswell. There is a charge associated with reclaiming the dog, this consists of a Government fine of £25 and the associated callout and kennelling charges, where applicable. Any stray dog will beheld at the Kennels for seven days. If you do not collect  your dog within seven days, you will lose the right to reclaim it, and we will try to re-home it.
Any complaint regarding dogs straying on school premises or interfering with the flow of traffic will be dealt with urgently.
Please remember it is a legal requirement to have an identification tag with the owners name and address inscribed on it on the dogs collar. This will assist us in returning your dog to you safely.

Noisy Dogs

Any complaints about dogs will be responded to by Environmental Protection department for further information visit Barking Dogs Webpage.
Some complaints cannot be dealt with by the Environmental Protection department. These will be passed quickly to the appropriate agency (e.g. the Police or RSPCA opens in a new window).

Fouling Legislation

The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 opens in a new window came into force on 2 July 2008.
This Act means that it is illegal to fail to clear up after your dog if it fouls any land which is open to the air and to which the public have access. The penalty for contravening the Act is a £75 "on the spot fixed penalty notice" or prosecution in the magistrates court.
A maximum penalty of £1000 applies to this Act.
In order to target our patrols and provide a more effective service we would be grateful for any information related to where and when people are allowing their dog to foul.
The Dog Warden will ensure the Council's legal duties are met, so far as dogs are concerned. They will also regularly patrol beaches and other areas covered by dog related by-laws, and put up anti-dog fouling stickers where needed.
