School Meals - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of a school meal?

The price of a primary meal for schools within the contract with Eden Foodservice is £2.00. For all other schools outside of the contract including all secondary schools please contact these schools direct.
The schools within the current contract can be found by viewing the Schools within Central Contract page.

How are school menus set & can I view them?

Menus are set on a 3 week period and the current menu for all Torbay schools within the central contract can be viewed online (see Related Documents).
Menus for self performing schools can be obtained by contacting the individual school concerned.
Menus fully comply with the government’s food and nutritional standards for school lunches that started to be introduced in 2006
We fully welcome the recent efforts made through the press and media to raise the profile of school meals. Both the School Meals Service and  have been working together over a number of years to change menus in order to incorporate all aspects of healthy eating.

What goes into a school meal?

The make-up of a meal is based upon the 'Wheel of Good Health'. This reinforces the need for meals to be balanced. A meal should be made up from a range of food types including fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates (e.g. bread, rice, pasta or potato), protein (essentially red or white meat, fish, and alternatives), foods containing fat or sugar and milk and dairy products.
It is therefore vital that all children have a balanced diet and do not stick to only a few types of foods all the time. We feel that our menus show a good range of products with over 30% of which are bought locally.
The School Meals Service, and other agencies are planning to work with schools and parents to help with encouragement and acceptance by children of our school meal service.

Do school meals comply with current nutritional standards?

Yes, meals supplied to school within the central contract fully comply with the Governments new food and nutrient based standards for school lunches. Food based standards were first introduced in September 2006.
